Shrub (Dr. David Zlesak, United States, 2007)
A rose that’s hardy enough for northern climates and strong enough for the deep south? That’s the Gaye Hammond for you, a vigorous shrub rose creating clusters of 2 inch blooms throughout the year on an upright shrub covered in glossy green foliage. Golden orange buds open into cheerful yellow blooms with tinge of coral and age to cream. Flowers are self-deadheading and the shrub is very resistant to black spot and mildew.
Gaye Hammond is the Past President of Houston Rose Society, an active speaker and writer, and all around champion of the rose.

Kate Leary –
For the past five years, I’ve had one of these growing in a large container on a patio in New Orleans (extremely hot, extremely humid.) It is a large attractive bush (approximately a four foot sphere with plenty of green leaves), large enough that I put it on the west side of my patio to provide shade for the patio which it does nicely since, with the pot, it is easily six feet tall. It is constantly covered with roses. Its flowers are hybrid tea shaped but smaller, pretty enough that I can cut a spray and put the spray in a vase on my dinner table, it looks fine. The pictures of the flowers on this website are accurate although I think mine might show a bit more of a red-orange tinge when they first open.
But aside from being a pretty bush that is big enough to provide shade! while producing a lot of pretty roses, the great thing about Gaye Hammond is, it’s pretty much bullet proof. This is a very very tough and very very vigorous rose.
I’m more of a hybrid tea person than a shrub rose person, but this rose is one of my favorites.
