(Old Velvet Moss), Moss (Jean Laffay, France, 1855)
Large, crimson-purple blooms with a lighter lilac-pink reverse cover the bush in mid-summer. The buds are heavily mossed with an oily, pine scent. Blooms are richly fragrant. A vigorous, if prickly, grower to a height of 6 feet.

Duane Scheidemantle –
This is a favorite moss rose of many, for good reason. The color, or blend of colors with various age of blooms on the plant is incredible.
It definitely needs room, but in season it’s impact simply cannot be ignored.
Mary Lennox –
There is a remarkable dignity to this rose. Its deep violet tones look as though they belong to dusk rather than daylight, and the mossed stems give it a character unlike any other plant I have grown. It thrives with a bold, untamed spirit and seems happiest when allowed a little freedom. A rose for those who enjoy something unusual, dramatic, and full of personality.
Josh Mattson (verified owner) –
A beautiful and tough rose that takes little winter damage in my z4/5 climate. It has stiff canes and can be a little unruly so I think it would be best grown on a tripod. I have been experimenting with training the canes sideways and this provokes an increased bloom. Romantic and interesting.
