Damask (Unknown origin, United Kingdom, before 1827)

Rounded red buds open in early summer to very double, fragrant white blooms edged in red with button centers. Canes are trailing, 2 to 3 feet in length, and it is worth the effort to train them to a low trellis or support.

AKA Painted Damask

Pronounced: lay-dah – from French Rose Names by Diana Bellucci

I really like Leda, its a small bush with a bit of sprawl, but the flowers are really beautiful and smell wonderful. One surprise I noticed after a couple of years or so is that it threw a sucker about a foot from the original plant. For me in NY it flowers once, no repeat so far.

A bit of an awkward shrub but the flowers are so plentiful and unique that one overlooks that fault. I also have seen it sucker quite far away, but only after the plant was well established for many years. It is incredibly hardy, too. I moved it when well established to a less desirable location but it came back and gre up again.

These blooms are absolutely exquisite and they are abundant when it is in full bloom: one of the delights of late June!
