Centifolia (Unknown Orgins, before 1664)
A miniature Centifolia with deep pink to violet double blooms with a paler pink center and button eye. Fragrant, 1½ inch blooms in early summer. The bush forms a dense 3 feet tall by 3 feet wide mound with small, dark green leaves, attractive in the landscape even when not blooming. I was elated to find it growing in the historically reconstructed gardens at Mt. Vernon. Apparently a favorite of President Washington.

Burgundian Rose has the very sweet little petal-packed blooms. A lovely gradient of color from the center petals to the outer petals. It is a “once bloomer” but it puts on a fabulous show. One of the first roses to bloom this season. The growth so far has been a tidy shape, but spreading in habit.

A nice little leaved and bloomed plant. It can spread on its own roots, but that isn’t a bad thing.
