    Angela Patterson – December 12, 2023

The photograph of Valentine’s Day is a little washed out compared to reality. This deep red rose — “velvety” is the perfect word for it — has a color and shape you just want to drink in. It is so, so pretty!!! The blossoms in its first season were about 2-3 inches across, which surprised me because it’s a mini so I thought its flowers would be smaller. I have it anchoring the far edge of a trellis in a zone 5a Colorado yard. This is its first season, but so far it has been a “polite” climber (unlike the Above and Beyond rose next to it which is trying to take all available space in all directions). Valentine’s Day made canes that had a thin diameter compared to the non-mini climbers like Lady in Red and Ramblin’ Red, and the thinner canes meant they cooperated exceptionally well with letting me position them on the trellis. The blossoms opened a bit as they aged so that you could see the golden yellow anthers. A brilliant pop of red color, the clusters of Valentine’s Day petals consistently made me smile whenever I would see them blooming.
