Shrub (Bédard, United States, 2009)
Yes, we’re having fun with words on this name. It’s a ‘party’ because of the big old-fashioned bright pink blooms that arrive in showy clusters. It’s ‘hardy’ because it was bred in Canada & has proven to be perfectly adapted for harsh winters. Party Hardy survives without winter protection in zone 3. The shrubby full plant keeps its clean green foliage to the ground, growing like mad as a result. It’ll stand head & shoulder above the other roses in very cold winter climates…actually preferring those conditions. At its best in the coldest climates.

I’m in Minnesota, zone 4, and we have very difficult winters with high winds. I purchased 3 of these last summer, and after letting them acclimate for a couple weeks in their own pots, I transplanted them into a full sun, new flower bed. The bed didn’t have particularly great soil, but these roses just took off and even bloomed by fall. We had a tough winter with very little snow cover, lots of wind and low temps, but these roses shot back in the spring and now they are covered with blooms and sending new shoots consistently. I’m in love with this variety, it is a match made in heaven for my “get tough or die” flower garden. High praise for Party Hardy!
