Species Rose (known prior to 1600)

If you are looking to grow a piece of history in your garden, you’ve come to the right place.  Rosa gallica officinalis is considered by most rosarians to be the oldest variety in commerce, with its origins dating back 3,000 to 5,000 years  This classic rose has drawn interest, not only for it’s beautiful blooms, but for it’s health benefits and high oil content. Throughout Europe in the Middle Ages, herbalists and apothecaries cultivated the variety for use medicinally.  The rose features large petaled, deep pink semi-double blooms that surround golden stamens. Early summer blooms are followed by small, round hips in autumn. Forms a compact, 3 to 4 foot shrub with matte green foliage.

Great rose, flowering in flushes. Healthy plant growth, manageable, and obviously we can enjoy the fragrance here. Not much to complain about!! I believe mine is in its third year, so finally established. I haven’t noticed hips, but I’m typically good about disbudding. Will leave some for hips next season!

Wonderful and healthy. 2-3 ft tall in my garden. Long bloom period and quite prolific for a once blooming rose. The foliage is nice even when out of flower. Plenty of fragrance as well.

Planted in 2022. This rose gets covered in blooms. I don’t always deadhead so it produces nice hips. It has been a very healthy rose, not much black spot or other issues. So far the plant has been well behaved as far as suckers go. It started throwing out octopus canes in 2024 and is currently 5-6 ft tall, 4 wide.
