Damask, (Unknown origins, known before 1832)
Named for the Iranian city of Isfahan and also known as ‘Pompon des Princes’, Ispahan is one of the classic Damask roses. In the late spring and early summer, exquisite medium pink blooms form a blanket covering this bush in color and fragrance. Once blooming, this explosion is not to be missed. Flowers have a strong fragrance and can be cut and elegantly displayed indoors. Strong disease resistance.

I ordered this rose in 2019 and for a few years it puttered along in my rose bed alongside the other pink roses. In 2022 it got big. Last year it became a six foot by seven foot monster, with hundreds of blooms that kept coming for well over a month. It also grew thorns. But wow, the blooms. More in six weeks than most modern roses have all summer. And yes, fragrant.

The size description is incorrect as the previous reviewer can attest. I purchased a grafted version from Pickering Nursery a while back that grew to about 7′ x 7′. I purchased the HCR own root hoping it will bee more restrained. Yes, it is covered with fragrant blooms when it matures. Worth the wait. Not to be missed.

This rose is a beast when it’s happy. I started it out in a large planter, but it quickly outgrew that, so I moved it to the ground later that year. It gets huge arching canes easily 7-8 ft long. Prolific bloomer in the spring. The scent is wonderful. Very healthy.
