Rambler – Climber (Karl Hetzel, Germany, 1986)

Clusters of cascading flowers, varying in color from magenta-pink to light red to almost purple, repeat bloom throughout the growing season. A vigorous grower that is perfect for training over walls or covering garden structures. Will tolerate some shade.

Ordered in 2024. Growing zone 5a (recently changed from 4b). This rose arrived very healthy and ready to grow. I planted it next to my chicken run o the eastern side to add beauty and provide early shade. It came through its first winter here without any problems. Then right before I got my electric net put back up after the last of the snow melted, I saw one of the big groundhogs sitting on it one morning. She had broken all the branches off. On top of that, this spring and early summer were exceptionally rainy, with the soil remaining saturated far too long. After it dried up, the chickens chose this rose as a site for a dust bath and completely uprooted it. With all that misfortune, it struggled to grow this year. Now that its roots are protected, the ground is dryer, and the electric net has foiled the groundhog, the rose is starting to perk back up. It’s a tough rose!
