Rated 3.00 out of 5 based on 1 customer rating
(1 customer review)

$25.95

Shrub (Harkness, United Kingdom, 1984)

A rose with an unusual color, rich purple fading to deep red, reflects back to the old Gallica roses. The blooms are fragrant, double and repeat well. The bush grows to 3 or 4 feet high and just as wide with medium green foliage.

Cardinal Hume (1923 – 1999) was an influential leader of the Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales. Prior to his death, Queen Elizabeth awarded him the Order of Merit.

Vigorous but diseased. I want to be clear my rating is based on the quality of the bush as an easy grower worth growing. It is one I’m very excited for. I have not had blooms but I’m sure I would not care about disease once it starts blooming.
Of the three roses I ordered, I have most problem with this one. Had some root exposure upon arrival but quickly remedied with more soil. Arrived with 4 basal canes and quite ready to bush. The smallest cane had damage at the soil line and eventually the whole cane turned yellow and I had to cut it off. Strange but the pith was gray around the damaged area.
It was very rooted and begging to be transplanted. It had transplant shock the most and stalled new growth for a long time. It is susceptible to blackspot but here in zone 8b it got powdery mildew. If you have disease pressure and want no-spray roses, I would not recommend this one. I eventually defoliated the mildewed roses and it is springing back with new growth.
I can attest that it’s very vigorous and eager to push new buds. In warmer climates it will be a beast up to 6’ high and 8’ wide. I haven’t seen blooms because of disease but I hope to update this review with higher stars after the spring season because of how beautiful its flowers are. Currently another two canes are yellowish with the main cane being less so than the other. However, all canes are pushing new growth.
Despite its disease, I would 100% buy more and look forward to its maturity.
