Hybrid Rubiginosa (Lord Penzance, United Kingdom, 1894)

Part of the grand family of Sweet Briar and Canina hybrid roses, Amy Robsart is a large shrub that features semi-double flowers in a clear deep pink color.   Flowers are accented with a moderate green apple scent.  The open blooms are great for pollinators and the rose sets attractive scarlet hued hips reliably.  Sturdy arching canes will make for a tall free standing shrub.

Amy Robsart was an English noble woman and the first wife of Robert Dudley, 1st Earl of Leicester.  Her death, after apparently falling down a staircase, is the subject of much speculation and intrigue.

does cover itself in blooms and does have very attractive hips, but, un tended gets 25 FEET high and 15 feet wide!

Beautiful but needs to be planted where it can take off. Needs a large space. I keep mine trimmed to about 12 feet in height. Also, it is extremely thorny and should be planted where it will not be close to walking paths, etc. The thorny branches can pull you in. But it is spectacular in bloom and love the green apple scent when it rains.

Very tall and I keep it at about 12 feet with trimming it after it blooms in the late spring/early summer. This rose needs a large space and should not be planted near walkways or where people gather as it is extremely thorny and can be dangerous as it will pull you in with it’s thorny branches. I love the green apple smell to the leaves when they get wet after a rain. The fragrance of the leaves is so beautiful. It is spectacular in bloom.
