Welcome
to High Country Roses
Old Garden Roses, Hardy Shrub and Species Roses,
all grown on their own roots!
Thank you for
your interest in High Country Roses. We are delighted to see
the increasing nationwide enthusiasm among gardeners for old-fashioned
and hardy roses, and welcome you to this fascinating field. We
find that there is always more to learn about the history and
cultivation of these endlessly rewarding plants, and we hope
you reap tremendous satisfaction from your horticultural efforts.
Our current
rose offering consists of over 250 varieties carefully selected
for hardiness and superior garden performance, as well as for
flower form, fragrance and repeat bloom. Our selection includes
many of the especially hardy Canadian Explorer and Parkland Series
roses developed in Canada in recent years. Royalties from the
sales of these roses help fund the Canadian Ornamental Plant
Foundations continuing research and development of hardy
roses.
Our roses
are grown on their own roots, which means that they are not grafted
onto a different rootstalk. Roses on their own roots not only
tend to be hardier in cold climates, but also remain true to
the original variety should the canes die back in winter.
Our predecessor,
High Country Rosarium, was founded in 1970 in Denver by Dr. Bill
Campbell, after he spent a decade collecting and testing Old
Garden Roses in the tough climate of the high plains in Colorado.
He found that the roses' extraordinary forms and fragrances were
often matched by great vigor. Hardy shrub and species roses were
added to the collection, providing qualities of low maintenance,
unusual stem and foliage characteristics and prominent rose hips
for wildlife as well as winter garden interest.
Bill Campbell
passed away August 30, 2003. We will miss his humor, enthusiasm
for learning and willingness to share his knowledge with others.
He will remain an inspiration to us.
High Country
Roses, in northeastern Utah, is operated by Heather Campbell
and Day DeLaHunt (Dr. Campbell's daughter and son-in-law).We've
been growing and shipping the roses from our Utah location throughout
the U.S. since 1994.
On the
following pages you will find an overview of rose classes and
our list of rose varieties. We appreciate your continuing interest
in High Country Roses and look forward to working with you.
